A New Zealand man is being held by police in Bali after being found with almost 5000 prescription pills in his possession.

Thomas Michael Daly, 38, is intellectually disabled and had a doctor's certificate for the medicine.

The amount had been a year's supply for Daly’s trip through Asia.

Authorities say it’s the biggest seizure in the island's history.

A lawyer and a former policeman are working to get Daly back to New Zealand, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed to 1 NEWS it's providing consular assistance.
