Melbourne man wins almost $50 million after accidentally buying two Oz Lotto tickets with same numbers

March 27, 2019

A Melbourne man has won almost $50 million after he accidentally bought two Oz Lotto tickets with the same numbers that went on to win the Division One Jackpot.

"The two winning entries from Victoria were registered to the same player – a hardworking St Albans man who was oblivious to his double division one bounty of more than $46.6 million (NZ$48.1 million)," the Lott said in statement.

He was shocked to learn that he had won the lotto and initially thought he had only won $23.3 million (NZ$24 million).

“You’re kidding!” he told the Lott.

"Am I seeing things?

"I just checked my entry online and I think I know what you’re about to tell me.

"I’m speechless. I can’t believe it.”

He then realised he had purchased a second entry of the same numbers winning Division One twice, doubling his winnings.

He says he was unsure how he was going to spend his fortune.

"I need time for the news to register," he told the Lott.

"I might think about retiring. First maybe a new home or a holiday.

"I’ll definitely share it with my family."

A player from Hobart won the rest of the $70 million (NZ$72.2 million) jackpot.
