The parents of Madeleine McCann say a new Netflix documentary set to air about their daughter's disappearance may "potentially hinder" the ongoing case.

Madeleine, who would now be 15, went missing from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal in 2007 when she was three-years-old.

A documentary on her disappearance will be released on in the in the UK on Friday (UK time) and her parents Gerry and Kate McCann are worried about its impact.

"We are aware that Netflix are planning to screen a documentary in March 2019 about Madeleine's disappearance.

"The production company told us that they were making the documentary and asked us to participate.

"We did not see - and still do not see - how this programme will help the search for Madeleine and, particularly given there is an active police investigation, it could potentially hinder it," they said in a statement.

The BBC reports that Mr and Mrs McCann said their views are "not reflected in the programme".
