Van that hit pedestrians in New York had stuck gas pedal, says driver

A van driver who hit three pedestrians outside New York's Penn Station has told police it happened accidentally when his gas pedal got stuck on a floor mat.

The three people were hit Friday evening (local time - Saturday morning NZT). Police say they were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Police are investigating the driver's claim the gas pedal got stuck on the floor mat.

Witness Mike Lamencusa says he saw the van hit two of the victims. He says he was standing outside Penn Station when he saw the van speed up and hit them. He says one victim was dragged by the van and it was "horrible."

A witness said the van dragged the victims for short period before stopping.

An alleged car thief in Perth, Australia got more than he bargained for when a woman in her 60s fought back with her umbrella. 

Video footage released by Western Australian Police shows a woman in her 60's being confronted by a man for her car keys yesterday, news publication Perth Now reported.

The woman runs but then turns back to face her attacker, hitting him multiple times with her umbrella. 

After having her keys stolen and her hand cut in the struggle, she fearlessly pursues the thief to land a few more blows. 

The attacker eventually makes his escape in her car, while knocking the woman to the ground. 

Police are looking for the suspect.
