In world first, woman who received womb transplant from dead donor gives birth

December 6, 2018

In a world first a woman in Brazil born without a uterus has given birth to a baby girl using a dead donor's womb.

The uterus came from a 45-year-old woman who died from a brain hemorrhage. The organ was transplanted to the 32-year-old in a surgery that took 10 and a half hours.

The transplant operation in Sao Paulo in September 2016 involved connecting the donor's organ to the woman's veins and arteries, ligiments and birth canal, Nine News reports.

The woman's eggs were fertilised before the operation and were implanted only seven months after the transplant.

This technique has been done eleven times before using the uterus of a living donor.
