'If I ever got impeached, I think the market would crash' - Donald Trump addresses the elephant in the room

August 24, 2018

US President Donald Trump has warned that the US economy could tank if he were to be impeached.

The president responded to speculation of his impeachment in an interview with Fox & Friends overnight, by saying the market would crash and "everybody would be very poor".

The interview took place at the White House after Mr Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to violating election laws and said he had been directed by Mr Trump.

"I tell you what, if I ever got impeached, I think the market would crash, I think everybody would be very poor," Mr Trump said.

"Because without this thinking, you would see numbers that you wouldn't believe in reverse," he said as he pointed to his head.

It is unlikely that his opponents would try to impeach him before the mid-term elections in November.

Troubled times for Trump

Trump's comments come a day after two former confidantes, former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and personal fixer Michael Cohen were convicted and pleaded guilty to a raft of crimes.

Cohen, who pleaded guilty to bank fraud, tax fraud and campaign finance violations, told federal investigators he attempted to hide payments to adult film actor Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal, on behalf of Trump,  disguising them as legal services rendered.
