House completely gutted after four-year-old boy lights fire while parents pop outside for a smoke

August 20, 2018

A house in Melbourne has been completely gutted after a four-year-old boy lit a piece of paper on fire using the kitchen stove.

The young boy lit the paper as his parents stepped outside their Epping home for a cigarette after cooking dinner just after 10pm last night, Nine News reports.

The four-year-old then carried the lit paper to his bedroom, where it soon spread through the rest of the house.

Firefighters were called to battle the blaze as it spread through the roof cavity, engulfing the home in flames.

"The mum was in a panic, she lost a lot of priceless memories," one neighbour said.

"She kept saying to the boy 'why did you do it, why did you light the house on fire, we've lost everything.'"

While no one was injured in the incident, the property was completely destroyed in the fire.

Police say the boy will not be charged over the blaze.
