Ground-breaking book helps explain sexual abuse to children, and what they can do about it

December 14, 2017

Kate and Rod Powers have taken a novel approach to try and help youngsters identify an ugly part of life.

An Australian couple have come up with a novel approach to tackling the uncomfortable topic of sexual abuse with kids.

Kate and Rod Power have authored a book for children showing them how to identify sexual abuse and what to do about it.

The book is called My Underpants Rule and it uses rhyming language to help engage with kids and capture their attention.

The main message in the book reads: "What's under my pants belongs only to me and others can't touch there or ask me to see."

A former policewoman, Kate was inspired to create it when she realised how close to home the issue could strike.

"A child sexually assaulted another child that was very close to my children and also there was a coach of my son's soccer team who was charged with assaulting many kids," she said.

After coming up with the idea, her husband Rod was tasked with putting his rhyming skills to the test.

"What's under your pants, there's lots of funny names and lots of funny noises that occur there and it just became a natural thing and with my crazy rhyme, I kind of put the words together," he said.

The book was first published two years ago and sales are closing in on 50,000 copies in Australia.

The success means they're now in the midst of a global launch and are looking at doing online tutorials on the subject.
