Grisly discovery of 44 dead dogs stuffed in freezer leads to US pet hoarder's arrest

November 16, 2018

A woman has been arrested after dozens of dead dogs were found in freezers and more than 100 others were found living in filthy conditions at her New Jersey home.

An inspection of 65-year-old Donna Roberts Shamong Township home by police on Wednesday found 44 dead dogs stuffed in freezers and 130 dogs living in squalor.

The animals found alive were taken away by animal rescue services and Roberts was charged with animal cruelty by police.

According to the Associated Press, Roberts' residence reeked of animal feces and urine.

Four of the canines were taken to an emergency vet in critical condition.

"Although the circumstances surrounding the demise of the 44 dogs that were discovered inside plastic bags in freezers remain under investigation, the deplorable and inhumane living conditions the rescued dogs were forced to endure is tragic," the New Jersey State Police said in a statement.

"Troopers take an oath to protect and safeguard life, including the lives and well-being of pets, which can be vulnerable to abuse."

Roberts' court date is pending.
