GoFundMe will pay homeless US man $600k raised for him after lawyer declared 'no money left'

September 9, 2018

GoFundMe has agreed to pay homeless US veteran Johnny Bobbit the equivalent of $NZ606,000 that was raised for him after his lawyer announced there was "no money left" earlier in the week.

Mr Bobbit’s lawyer Christopher C. Fallon Jr told CNN, “We reached an agreement today with GoFundMe and they have agreed to make sure he will be made whole.”

Australia's 9 News reports he has already received $NZ29,000 of that guaranteed money to get him off the streets and into housing.

Kate McClure and Mark D’Amico created the fundraising page and allegedly kept the money from him.

Mr Bobbit then filed a suit against the couple to retrieve the remaining money but lawyers found there was none left.

When his lawyer told him there was no money left Mr Bobbit was "completely devastated" by the news.

It was originally believed there was $NZ303,000 remaining in the account from the initial $NZ606,000 raised, but now that number is believed to be $0.

Mr Fallon told CNN, “Where the money went, I have no idea.

“That’s a lot of money to go through to in just a short period of time.”

Mr Fallon said he was "completely shocked" when he heard the news.

Donors were also upset. Janine McClenny was a donor and told PEOPLE: “It looks like they scammed him. That is despicable. I didn’t donate to the couple, I donated to Johnny.”

Mr Bobbit made headlines last year after giving his last $NZ30 to help Ms McClure buy petrol. To thank him for his generosity, Ms McClure set up the GoFundMe page and encouraged people to donate so he would no longer have to live on the streets.

After the money was raised by 14,000 donors it was deposited into the personal bank accounts of Ms McClure and Mr D’Aimco, but it was recently revealed Mr Bobbit did not have access to the money.

That’s when Mr Bobbit accused Ms McClure and Mr D'Aimco of keeping it from him.

They deny the claims they have spent it on themselves.
