A glimpse inside Notre Dame Cathedral after fire ravages the centuries old Paris landmark

A closer look inside the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, one of Frances' iconic landmarks, shows some of the damage caused by the fire that's gutted the church.

The centuries old building has lost its spire but officials say the famed rectangular towers were saved in the blaze that started early this morning (NZT).

The Paris prosecutors' office says investigators are treating the fire as an accident and have ruled out arson, including possible terror -related motives for now.

The top of the 856-year-old cathedral was undergoing a 6 million-euro (NZ$10 million) renovation project.  Authorities are investigating if the renovation work was a factor in starting or spreading the fire.

President Emmanuel Macron has promised to rebuild the fire-ravaged cathedral.
