United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged all members of the UN Security Council to show restraint and to avoid any acts that could escalate matters in Syria.
He said the Security Council has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security and stressed "the need to avoid the situation from spiraling out of control."
The United States, France and Britain launched military strikes in Syria to punish President Bashar Assad for an apparent chemical attack against civilians and to deter him from doing it again.
Guterres said, "Any use of chemical weapons is abhorrent. The suffering it causes is horrendous."
