Fire wipes out Cook Islands mobile phone service

The Prime Minister's office says the Bluesky Transmission Centre's a write-off.

A fire in popular holiday destination the Cook Islands has wiped out all mobile phone services – and it may be weeks before it's restored.

The fire, at its Aroa station, has taken down the mobile core network, satellite connectivity and international calling facilities.

Bluesky Cook Islands says the extent of damage to all software and hardware equipment is yet to be assessed by technicians and recovery of mobile services is not yet known.

Some local businesses have been told it could take up to three weeks to restore.

Most landlines around Rarotonga are unaffected but they are currently down in the popular tourist area of Muri.

Internet services are working but locals are reporting its slow and intermittent.
