Earthquake off Vanuatu coast downgraded to 7.0

An earthquake off the coast of Vanuatu has been downgraded to 7.0, according to the US Geological Survey.

The 27.2km deep quake hit 1km southeast of Norsup at 7.33am.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre initially said hazardous tsunami waves were possible along the coast of Vanuatu, however now says there is no threat.

Civil Defence has confirmed there is no tsunami threat to New Zealand.
