Drone technology deployed to locate sharks, keep swimmers safe at Sydney beach

December 11, 2017

Lifeguards at beach in Sydney, Australia have a new weapon to keep swimmers safe this summer.

A high-tech drone has been developed that can spot sharks much better than the human eye, as well as distinguish them from other sea life.

The "Westpac Little Ripper" drone hovers above the ocean and gives Australian swimmers more confidence in the water.

It can also send a signal when sharks get too close to swimmers, as well as release an inflatable device to help rescue beach-goers when they get into trouble in the waves.

It automatically inflates when it gets in the water and it's capable to supporting up to four people.

The drone will be deployed at Sydney's Bilgola Beach.
