Created in the lab: Sony unveils new robotic puppy

November 2, 2017

The bionic pet has facial recognition, wags its tails and can even learn new tricks.

If you like the idea of having a pet, but don't want to deal with all of the practicalities - Sony may have the answer for you.

The company has created a new robotic dog - Aibo - which was unveiled in Tokyo on Wednesday.

Aibo can recognise your face give you high fives, chase a ball and even learn new tricks.

It syncs with your smartphone using an app, allowing owners to play with it remotely.

The bionic pet follows on from Sony's previous Aibo model, which became defunct in 2005.

The price tag, however, might leave some wanting - pre-orders open this week at about NZ$2500.
