Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for cool-headedness over escalating tensions between the US and North Korea in a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump, urging both sides to avoid words or actions that could worsen the situation.
Today's call came after Trump unleashed a slew of fresh threats against North Korea overnight, declaring the US military "locked and loaded" and warning North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that he "will regret it fast" if he takes any action against US territories or allies.
Trump has pushed China to pressure North Korea to halt a nuclear weapons program that is nearing the capability of targeting the US.
But China says it alone can't compel Pyongyang to end its nuclear and missile programs.
Trump tweeted overnight: "Military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely. "
North Korea has announced a detailed plan to launch a salvo of ballistic missiles toward the US Pacific territory of Guam, a major military hub and home to US bombers. If carried out, it would be its most provocative missile launch to date.
Trump said this week the US would unleash "fire and fury" on North Korea if it continued to threaten the US.
The tweet was one of several Trump sent overnight. He also retweeted links to Fox News stories on Trump's frustration with Senate Republicans and drone strikes in Somalia.
