China plants flag on the moon in historic move

December 6, 2020

The uncrewed Chang'e 5 space problem has lifted off with new lunar material.

China has planted its flag on the moon for the first time, becoming only the second nation to do so after the US more than 50 years ago.

The unmanned Chang'e 5 space probe spent more than 19 hours on the moon's surface, gathering samples from an ancient volcanic region.

A return capsule carrying two kilograms of dust and rock is due to land in Mongolia in about two weeks.

It'll be the first time lunar material's been brought to earth in more than 40 years.
