Broadcasting Christchurch mosque shooting video may have breached Australia's media rules

The social media giant is facing mounting pressure to change the way it operates.

Australia's communications watchdog is investigating whether the broadcasting of the video footage of the Christchurch mosque shooting breached media rules.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has written to national, commercial and subscription broadcasters asking for information on the nature, extent and timing of the broadcast of content relating to the attack which has left 50 people dead.

ACMA will also meet with broadcasters to discuss whether current rules are adequately protecting Australian audiences.

The regulator is concerned about content made available or linked to on broadcasters' websites.

But as this content is beyond ACMA's remit, it will talk to the Australian Press Council about reviewing it.

Labor frontbencher Ed Husic said there were also questions to answer about allowing "extreme" views to be vented on television, such as those who call for a ban on Muslim migrants and equate all Muslims with terrorism.

"Why is it that extremists are given platforms to be able to put that type of commentary out there and nothing happens about it? It is being done purely for ratings," Mr Husic told Sky News on Monday.

"This is not helping. We have a big challenge ahead of us to try to now look at what is actually promoting this sort of hate speech in the public space."
