An eight-year-old boy in Indonesia handed out his dad's ecstasy pills to school friends after mistaking them for lollies.

The young boy was given the pills by his two-year-old brother who found the pills in their father's car last Monday, according to local media .

The boy then cut up the pills and shared them with friends at school.

"The kids thought the green pills in their parents' car were candy. They cut up the pills and shared them with friends," Riau Police spokesperson Sunarto said.

In total four children aged seven to nine shared the pills, with two more kids declining to eat them due to their bitter taste.

Those who took the pills complained of headaches and were taken to hospital.

"They are feeling better now. They have received treatment," Mr Sunarto said.

The boy's father was arrested and will face charges over the incident.
