Bottle of 'the holy grail of whisky' sells for world record $1.6 million

October 4, 2018

The world's most expensive bottle of whisky, described as "the hold grail of whiskys" has been sold for 848,000 pounds, or $NZ1,688,308, at auction in Edinburgh.

The BBC reports the Macallan Valerio Adami 1926 60-year-old went under the hammer at Bonhams Whisky Sale.

The whiskey, which was in a vat for 60 years from 1926 and then bottled, fetched 700,000 pounds ($1.393 million) plus a 148,000 pounds ($294,622) sales premium.

Experts describe it as the holy grail of whiskys because of the combination of its rarity, vintage and unique artwork.

The bottle came in a specially-commissioned cabinet, or tantalus, and the previous owner had bought it direct from the Macallan distillery for an undisclosed sum in 1994.

Another bottle of The Macallan Valerio Adami 1926 had been sold at Bonhams Hong Kong in May this year for a then world record 814,081 pounds ($1,620.571).
