The boys had been eliminated as soloists and tried their luck as a group.
They finished the competition in third place, but the English-Irish pop boy-band signed on with Simon Cowell's record label.
It propelled them to international success.
Five albums followed, which topped the charts and generated hit singles including, What Makes You Beautiful' and Best Song Ever.
