A man charged with allegedly mutilating the genitals of a woman who underwent a procedure at a Newcastle business is due to face a NSW court in a fortnight.

The 33-year-old victim engaged the man's services in 2016 but later made a complaint of mutilation to NSW Police who formed a strike force to investigate.

The 37-year-old accused - who is not a qualified medical practitioner - was on Tuesday arrested at his home at Terrigal on the NSW Central Coast and charged with "female genital mutilation"

Detectives also raided a tattoo and body piercing studio at Erina.

The wide variety of services he offers are posted on his business's Facebook page, including tongue splitting, nipple removal and subdermal implants where silicone is placed underneath the skin, allowing the body to heal over the implant creating a raised design similar to horns.

Body modification is not legislated in NSW, however, people working in what's known as the "skin penetration" industry are required to follow public health regulations, a police spokesperson said in a statement.

The man was granted bail to appear at Gosford Local Court on May 15.
