Anti-vax mum sentenced to seven days jail for refusing to inoculate son in US

October 5, 2017

A US mother has been sent to jail for seven days after refusing to vaccine her nine-year-old son.

Detroit news station 7 Action News reported Rebecca Bredow would not comply with court orders to get her son vaccinated, after agreeing last year that she would.

"I would rather sit behind bars standing up for what I believe in, than giving in to something I strongly don’t believe in," she told the court.

Her ex-husband, who wanted his son vaccinated, went to the judge after Bredow would not vaccinate the boy.

"It's clear to me that you don't care about orders," Judge Karen McDonald told Bredow.

"Even if you agreed to them, which you did."

Bredow described herself as an "educated, vaccine-choice mother" and said she had been "fully-compliant with all state Michigan laws".

7 Action News said Bredow and her ex-husband had agreed to vaccinate the child, but her views had since changed.

"You have publicly stated over the last couple of days you will not follow this court order," Judge McDonald said.

"So, I'm sentencing you to seven days in jail."

The ex-husband has been granted temporary custody while Barlow is incarcerated and while the son is being vaccinated.
