The escaped prisoner in Rarotonga accused of killing two people has been found dead, it is being reported in the Cook Islands.
Chris Rimamotu allegedly shot two people dead yesterday afternoon.
Police had been negotiating with Rimamotu today after shots were heard.
In a Facebook post, Cook Islands Police say "the situation with Chris Rimamotu has been contained".
"It is now safe for the community in regards to this matter," they said.
The Cook Islands News is reporting that Rimamotu has been found dead at a property where he was hiding. Police, however, have yet to confirm the report.
Rimamotu, who was in jail for the abduction and sexual assault on a young girl, escaped when he was accompanied home by a prison officer to collect some of his belongings.
1 News understands the two dead are his ex-partner and her current partner.
Police earlier conducted door to door searches in the village of Titikaveka - near where the two dead were found.
Police earlier warned residents to stay indoors or travel in groups and not to approach Rimamotu who they said was extremely dangerous.
A number of organisations closed their doors today citing safety reasons - including a school holiday programme and the Esther Honey Foundation which relies on mostly New Zealand volunteer vets.
