After 1.6 million km, Google's self-driving cars haven't caused an accident

Google says its self-driving cars have now logged more than 1.6 million kilometres in fully autonomous mode - and have not once caused an accident.

Google's autonomous cars have now logged more than 1.6 million kilometres - but how do they sense road conditions?

The project began releasing monthly reports on Friday after calls for more transparency, and the initial report also contained information stretching back to the start of the project in 2009.

The vehicles have travelled more than 1,011,338 miles, or 1,627,591km in fully autonomous mode as of June 3, and while the vehicles have been involved in 12 minor accidents in that time, not once was a Google vehicle at fault.

"Given the time we're spending on busy streets, we'll inevitably be involved in accidents; sometimes it's impossible to overcome the realities of speed and distance," the report said.

Further details of the accidents show that most involved other vehicles rear-ending the Google vehicles, with some also occurring while the cars were being manually controlled.
