Showers in the west and south, may turn to rain for a time, fine in the east. Snow possible down to 200 metres at first in the far south.

Saturday

North Island, a period of rain for most places with possible heavy falls in the west. South Island, rain with some heavy and possibly thundery falls in the west. Showers elsewhere, with snow to low levels in the far south.

Sunday

Showers in the west and south, mostly fine in the east. Snow to low levels in the far south.

Chatham Islands

Periods of rain, and westerlies rising to gale for a time on Friday. Showers, mainly morning and evening on Saturday as southwest winds turn strong northwest. On Sunday, rain at times with gale southwesterlies.

Northland, Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty

A few showers turning to rain for a time during the afternoon, briefly heavy.

Gisborne and Hawkes Bay

High cloud, with a few showers spreading from the ranges.

Waikato to Wellington, including the central high country, also Wairarapa

Periods of rain, heavy at times with possible squally thunderstorms. Severe northwest gales in Wellington this morning.

Western Nelson, Buller, Westland, Fiordland and Stewart Island

Periods of rain, heavy at times, with squally thunderstorms and hail. Snow lowering to 400 metres in Fiordland Thursday night.

Remainder of Nelson and Marlborough

Occasional showers.

Canterbury, Otago and Southland

High cloud, with rain in the west and a few spots spreading further east. Snow lowering to 400 metres in Southland and Otago overnight Thursday into Friday.

Chatham Islands

Occasional rain.
