North Island, Scattered showers in the north and west, turning to rain for a time south of Taranaki, then clearing. A period of rain in the east, clearing from the south. South Island, a few early showers in Nelson and Marlborough, and coastal showers in the east and south. Fine or becoming fine elsewhere.

Friday

North Island, fine or becoming fine for most, but isolated showers for Northland, and Coromandel to Gisborne. South Island, A few showers in the south, and about the west coast in the morning. Mainly fine elsewhere, but areas of morning and evening cloud.

Saturday

North Island, Mainly fine, but isolated showers from Northland to Bay of Plenty. South Island, Showers developing in the west, and cloudy periods about the east coast. Fine or becoming fine elsewhere.

Chatham Islands

Occasional showers, clearing on Saturday. Strong northwesterlies changing southwest on Thursday, easing on Saturday.

Cyclone Gita moves southeast across central New Zealand today, bringing severe gales and heavy rain to central portions of the country.

Northland to Waitomo, including Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, Taumarunui, Taupo

Showers, becoming isolated tonight as northerly gales ease.

Gisborne, Hawkes Bay

Mostly fine, however a few showers this evening. Northwest gales developing this afternoon, easing tomorrow.

Taranaki, Taihape, Whanganui, Manawatu, Wairarapa

Fine spells. A few showers, some heavy tomorrow evening. Northerlies, severe gale in exposed places, this evening and overnight.

Horowhenua to Wellington

Showers becoming isolated tomorrow morning, then frequent and heavier tomorrow evening. Northerly gales from evening, possibly severe, easing tomorrow morning.

Nelson, Marlborough, Buller, Westland

Rain today, heavy at times. Showers tomorrow, possible thunderstorms. Severe gales in exposed places, easing tomorrow.

Canterbury, Otago, Southland, Fiordland

Periods of rain, heavy at times. Southerlies, gale in Canterbury.

*STORM WARNING IN FORCE* Variable 10 knots but southeast 35 knots north of Separation Point, becoming easterly 35 knots everywhere this afternoon. Changing northwest 50 knots early this evening before easing to 40 knots late this evening and to 30 knots Wednesday morning. Becoming northwest 20 knots but northeast 15 knots in the south Wednesday evening. Sea becoming high for a time. Northerly swell rising to 6 metres for a time. Poor visibility in periods of rain until this evening, then again in showers, with possible thunderstorms,from Wednesday afternoon.

Outlook following 3 days: Changing early Thursday southeast 15 knots but 25 knots in the north with rough sea, easing Thursday afternoon variable 10 knots everywhere. Moderate northwest swell,easing Thursday.
