North Island, a few showers for most places, but rain Auckland northwards at first, and mainly fine in Hawkes Bay and southern Gisborne. South Island, rain or showers spreading to most places, snow lowering to 200 metres in the south.


North Island, occasional showers, with snow lowering to 500 metres in the far south. South Island, showers retreating to the south and northeast, and becoming mainly fine elsewhere, snow lowering to near sea level in the south.


North Island, fine spells and a few showers, but mainly fine north of Taranaki to Gisborne and south of Auckland. South Island, showers in the south and in the northeast, with snow to low levels in the south at first, mainly fine elsewhere.

Chatham Islands

A few showers, becoming more frequent late Saturday. Strong southwesterlies, tending lighter northwesterly for a time on Saturday and Sunday.

Gisborne and Hawkes Bay

Cloudy at times, with brief showers this afternoon or evening.

Buller, Westland and Canterbury

A period of rain this morning with snow to 500 metres in Canterbury, then becoming fine.

Otago, Southland and Fiordland

Showers with snow to 300 metres, becoming confined to the south coast this afternoon.

Chatham Islands

Fine spells and a few showers.


Southwest 20 knots. Turning northwest 15 knots but 25 knots north of Tokomaru Bay this morning, easing to northwest 15 everywhere this afternoon. Sea becoming rough in the north for a time. Southerly swell 2 metres easing. Easterly swell 1 metre dying out.

Outlook following 3 days: Becoming Saturday morning variable 10 knots.Developing Saturday night northwest 15 knots, rising early Sunday 25 knots,changing late Sunday southwest 25 knots,rising for a time Monday 35 knots offshore with very rough sea. Southwest swell becoming heavy Monday.
