ASB Classic director preparing for 'pretty amazing' men's draw

January 7, 2019

Karl Budge is expecting one of the all-time great tournaments in 2019.

ASB Classic director Karl Budge is expecting a men's draw to remember in 2019, with the Auckland tournament beginning today.

After the success of the women's draw over the past week that saw Julia Goerges defend her title last night , Budge isn't expecting any let up in quality as the men's draw begins this afternoon.

Speaking to 1 NEWS, Budge spoke about the quality on show, with a number of big names including the likes of Frenchman Gael Monfis, crowd favourite David Ferrer and teen sensation Denis Shapovalov all on show over the coming week.

"The sun's shining, were forecast for another week of sunshine - I can't remember the last time the ASB Classic's had two weeks of sunshine," Budge joked.

"We're thrilled to bits. Monfis is looking an absolute weapon out on court already.

"Shapovalov - I get so excited everytime I talk about Denis - is going to headline our night session tonight. [There's] three or four Kiwis that are really in the mix to make a good run here.

"It's all set for a pretty amazing ASB Classic men's week."
