ASB Classic second seed Fabio Fognini has just avoided becoming the latest seed to be upset at the tournament today.

The Italian world No.13 beat German Peter Gojowczyk 7-5 in the third set tie-break to secure a nervy 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 win on centre court in Auckland.

Fognini won the decisive point at 5-5 in the tie-break after Gojowczyk hit a low forehand long.

A relieved Fognini was happy to get a win in his first match of the year.

"It’s a lot of work to do it, it’s the first round, I fighting with everything, I won 7-6 but I lost two or three point, I was a bit lucky," he said after the match.

Earlier today, top seed John Isner lost 7-6, 7-6 in the second round to his compatriot Taylor Fritz.
