Huge upset sees top seed John Isner dumped out of ASB Classic in his first match

January 9, 2019

The top seed has fallen early at the men's ASB Classic tennis tournament in Auckland this afternoon, with two-time champion John Isner losing in the second round.

The popular American was beaten 7-6, 7-6, by fellow American Taylor Fritz.

Isner was seen as a strong contender to take out this year's tournament after the withdrawal of other high-profile stars Tomas Berdych, Gael Monfils and last year's winner Roberto Bautista Agut.

Four-time champion David Ferrer will now be the firm favourite to win the tournament which saw another upset yesterday when Kiwi Rubin Statham knocked out South Korea's Hyeon Chung in straight sets.
