'A good prospect' - Chinese junior champ Wu Yibing given wildcard spot at ASB Classic

December 19, 2017

Chinese junior tennis champion Wu Yibing has been confirmed to play at next year's ASB Classic, given a main draw wildcard spot in Auckland.

The 18-year-old is currently ranked the number one junior in the world and is ranked 302 in the men's world tennis rankings.

ASB Classic director Karl Budge said the teen is a star of the future.

"Anytime you get a world junior number one and a grand slam champion it's a pretty good get," said Budge.

"It just adds to what is already a pretty impressive line-up of top end talent and the wave of tomorrow's stars."

Yibing won the Junior US Open this year.

"There is a lot of pressure on this young kid, China has tasted a lot of success on the women's side and it hasn't come on the men's side," said Budge.

"He's got what they sort of say which is a bit of a cliché, an all court game. He's got some big shots when he needs to, he gets around the ball really well.

"A good prospect, looks like a really good athlete and if he can continue to develop the way he has, the future certainly looks to be very bright."

The ASB Classic begins on January 2.
