Four-time champion David Ferrer was greeted with a guard of honour by fans after he pulled out of his ASB Classic match last night due to a calf injury.
The 36-year-old Spaniard couldn't overcome the injury with the score at 1-all in the first set against compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta.
When leaving the Auckland venue Ferrer waved to the crowd and took a bow before hobbling out of the ASB Tennis Centre.
Ferrer's withdrawal added to a day of upsets at the Classic yesterday with top seed American John Isner losing 7-6, 7-6 in the second round to his compatriot Taylor Fritz.
Ferrer was in his 14th tournament in Auckland.
