Kyle Edmund has suffered a narrow straight-sets defeat to American John Isner in the quarter-finals of the Auckland Classic.
The British No.3 was looking to continue his good start to the season by upsetting the fourth seed, but went down, 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-5).
He forced nine break points on Isner's serve but was unable to convert any of them.
Three of them gave Edmund chances to win the second set but Isner held on and came through a second tiebreak.
In the last four, Isner will face Canadian Denis Shapovalov or Ugo Humbert of France.
Australian John Millman is through to the quarter-finals after an impressive 4-6 6-3 6-3 win over Russian world No.16 Karen Khachanov.
The Australian No.3's reward is a showdown with Frenchman Benoit Paire on Thursday evening for a place in the semi-finals.
