A year out from the World Cup, John Campbell assesses the state of Japanese rugby

Japan hosts two All Blacks’ Tests in the next fortnight and the matches are being played with one eye on next year’s Rugby World Cup.

As the hosts, Japan is looking to build on recent success in a country where rugby is a minor sport - and they’re looking to the next generation to lead the way.

Tokyo-based Kiwi rugby coach Callum Johnston says the standard of coaching is improving.

“That‘s more noticeable than perhaps the level of play,” he said.

The third Bledisloe Cup Test is being played in Yokohama tomorrow night before the All Blacks face Japan next Saturday.

Beforehand, TVNZ's John Campbell took a look at the state of the game in Japan.
