'We've got one of the smaller packs' - Hurricanes looking to improve tight-five ahead of Chiefs clash

March 12, 2019

The Hurricanes' tight-five has been under the pump this season, with scrum coach Dan Cron adamant his forward pack will improve.

Cron's forward pack struggled to match it with the Highlanders during their 25-22 win in Wellington last Saturday.

"We've got one of the smaller packs going around, that's pretty common knowledge. But we're also one of the toughest," said Cron.

Against Super Rugby defending champions the Crusaders and current competition leaders last month, Cron said he was impressed with his next opponents - the Chiefs' - efforts.

"They had a pretty impressive night against the Crusaders scrum-wise, one area of the game they can definitely hang their hat on at the moment."

You would think a team that has been scrutinised for their set piece they would training hard often, but that isn’t the case for the Hurricanes.

"We actually only have five live scrums a week, which is quite different from Japan where you can do over a hundred."

The Hurricanes also use ipads and drone footage in training to help them pinpoint potential weaknesses. The Canes take on a winless Chiefs side this weekend at FMG Stadium in Hamilton.
