'We had to respond' - Steve Hansen hails All Blacks' fightback after Perth embarrassment

August 17, 2019

The All Blacks retained the Bledisloe Cup with a 36-0 win over Australia at Eden Park.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen heralded the response of his side to last week's humbling defeat to the Wallabies, returning serve with a 36-0 victory to retain the Bledisloe Cup at Eden Park.

Needing nothing but a win to retain their hold on the Bledisloe Cup, Hansen's side delivered in style, running in five tries and conceding none to ensure that Australia will have to wait at least another year to reclaim the famous trophy.

Speaking to media afterwards, Hansen revealed his satisfaction and pride at the scale of the Eden Park win - the occasion made all the more special being his 100th Test in charge of the All Blacks.

"When they play as well as they did tonight, [I'm] extremely proud of them," he began.

"We had to respond to a performance last week that we would all say wasn't good enough from our point of view, and exceptional from Australia.

"Seven days is a long time in sport, we've seen that before. This week they've worked hard. Everyone's done their jobs, from the analysts right through to the players.

"You've just got to be proud of them."
