The Black Ferns Sevens star missed the games final victory over Australia with injury.

Black Ferns Sevens star Tyla Nathan-Wong has revealed the moment she discovered her team had become Commonwealth Games gold medallists, after missing the final due to injury.

Nathan-Wong, 23, went down in the warm-up ahead of New Zealand's final victory over Australia, before the Black Ferns Sevens rallied in her absence, with an extra-time victory to take the gold.

Speaking to 1 NEWS today as her side returned home from Japan, Nathan-Wong revealed the moment she found out she'd become a gold medallist.

"I was actually in the ambulance when I found out the girls had won," she said.

"One of our support staff from the New Zealand Olympic Committee told me and I just burst out crying, I was so proud of their achievement."

Nathan-Wong also spoke about her team's celebrations, which included her belated medal presentation.

"We had a team meeting after, and then my manager got to present me with my medal.

"I had to do a little speech, I couldn't keep the tears back."
