Watch: Chris Boyd says Kiwi coaches more valuable than players in Europe

January 30, 2018

The Hurricanes coach is the latest big name to leave for the Northern Hemisphere.

Departing Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd says that Kiwi bosses are now in higher demand than players for Europe's elite rugby sides.

Boyd, 59, today confirmed that the 2018 Super Rugby season will be his last with the Hurricanes, joining English side Northampton Saints at the end of the English season.

Speaking to 1 NEWS today, Boyd said that his coaching counterparts were now more sought after than Kiwi players at club level.

"It's just the way the world's going," he said.

"New Zealand's got a good legacy in coaching."

However, Boyd also says that New Zealand Rugby has a fight on their hands to ensure the brightest talents remain on home soil.

"If you look around the world at the moment, there are a lot of Kiwis plying their trade - at all sorts of levels - in the coaching sphere."

"The tough thing for New Zealand is not being able to keep our players and our coaches that are leaving earlier and earlier."

"It just means that our intellectual property, our philosophy and the way we do things are slowly leeching out of New Zealand, and it'll continue to do so."
