Watch: Bay of Plenty lock whips out massive side-step to split Southland defence, score stunning game-winner

October 7, 2018

Bay of Plenty have managed to fend off a valiant performance from Southland to secure a late 26-22 win in Invercargill this afternoon.

The Steamers, who haven't won since August 23, managed to steal the win late after a stunning piece of solo running by lock Kane Leaupepe.

Leaupepe was handed the ball 10m from the line and went to a big step off his right foot to create a hole in the Stags' defence which he then attacked.

He shook off a couple of jersey-grabbing attempts to dive over and hand Southland their 18th-straight loss meaning the losing streak now reaches 729 days.

Southland looked set to end the streak when Isaac Te Tamaki scored a solo stunner in the second half but Southland couldn't hold on.

The win doesn't do much to the Championship standings heading into the final round with Bay of Plenty remaining fifth while Southland are two places back in last.
