Video: Squire teases newbie Havili for not pulling Makos-inspired 'fins up' move after first ABs try

October 6, 2017

"It's probably a tradition he should've stuck with," Squire said, adding that Havili can expect a fine.

David Havili thought he had the dream debut when he crossed the chalk to score for the All Blacks in his first Test against Argentina in Buenos Aires last Sunday.

But he was reminded after the game of a tradition he had failed to uphold in all the excitement.

The born-and-bred Tasman Mako failed to execute the team's all-important "fins up" celebration.

The simple gesture started in 2009 during a home game against Auckland in Nelson when Tasman captain Andrew Goodman threw up a fin after his brilliant run resulted in a try - it has since been adapted by household names such as Marty Banks, James Lowe and current All Black Liam Squire.

Squire was asked what Havili could expect for his failure to throw up a fin after scoring in the second half of the All Blacks' 36-10 victory.

"He's already been copping a bit of stick about that from the Tazzy boys so it's probably a tradition he should've stuck with," Squire said.

"He'll probably have to pay a fine - I'm not 100 per cent sure."
