Video: 'I was a goalkeeper' - All Blacks rookie Shannon Frizell on playing football for Tonga

June 21, 2018

The Highlanders loose forward is set debut in front of home fans at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.

All Blacks rookie Shannon Frizell could have had a very different sporting career had he not switched and decided to play rugby union.

Frizell, 24, was a football player before he discovered his knack for rugby union.

The Highlanders loose forward said he wasn't too sure what convinced him to pick up the oval ball.

"I don't know, just go with the flow," said Frizell.

"Yeah when I was about 17 - I played soccer for Tonga."

When asked if he played striker or midfielder by a reporter at today's press conference in Dunedin, Frizell couldn't help but laugh when he revealed his position.

Frizell is set to debut for the All Blacks in Dunedin for the final Test against France on Saturday.

"Nah, I was a goalkeeper."

Frizell has been named to start in the number six jersey for the All Blacks for their final Test against France at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday.

He will be one of four All Blacks players debuting for New Zealand.

Jack Goodhue is set to make his first start at centre with Jackson Hemopo and Richie Mo'unga to make their debuts for the All Blacks coming off the bench.
