'The tournament's not won in the first week' – Tana Umaga philosophical after Blues' opening loss

February 24, 2018

The Blues lost another local derby, going down 41-34 to the Highlanders.

Blues coach Tana Umaga says he isn't too concerned with his side's 41-34 loss to the Highlanders to open the Super Rugby season.

Having travelled to Dunedin to open their campaign, the Blues fell away to lose the high scoring thriller, extending their winless streak over fellow New Zealand sides.

Speaking after the match though, Umaga said there were plenty of positives to take away from the loss.

"Obviously disappointed for us," he said.

"We didn't come away empty handed so we're keeping pretty positive on what we can control."

"But we know we need to be better and keep improving - the tournament's not won in the first week."

The Blues are next in action against the Chiefs at Eden Park on March 2.
