'There's a lot of guys coming through' – Damian McKenzie talks up NZ's first-five talent

January 17, 2018

Lima Sopoaga's departure leaves a free spot in the All Blacks this year.

All Blacks and Chiefs star Damian McKenzie has talked up his competition, as he targets the back up spot to Beauden Barrett for this year's international rugby season.

With Lima Sopoaga and Aaron Cruden both having signed deals with European clubs, the All Blacks are without a guaranteed back up to IRB Player of the Year Barrett, with McKenzie hoping to switch from fullback into the number 10 jersey.

Speaking to 1 NEWS today though, McKenzie says that there's more than enough competition to take that role - with the likes of Otere Black and Richie Mo'unga also likely contenders.

"There's a lot of guys coming through," McKenzie said.

"It's always good having those people vying for that same position - it puts a bit more pressure on you to perform."

"It's going to be a big year, and a challenge I'm looking forward to."
