Taranaki have pulled off a sensational upset over Canterbury, coming from behind to defeat the home team 55-43 at AMI Stadium in Christchurch tonight to claim the Ranfurly Shield and go on top of the Mitre 10 Cup Premiership ladder.
Trailing 31-21 at halftime against Canterbury it looked like the home side had the match in the bag.
In the final quarter of the match the scores were level at 38-38 before Taranaki's hard working openside flanker Lachlan Boshier crossed over to score down the right hand corner.
Taranaki's winger Manasa Mataele all but sealed victory for the amber and black side making an excellent read, catching a poor chip and chase by Canterbury's first-five Richie Mou'nga at halfway in the 71st minute.
He ran 50 metres untouched to score the match-winner for Taranaki.
Taranaki will defend the Ranfurly Shield next Wednesday in New Plymouth against Manawatu.
