Tana Umaga, the current coach of the Blues, will take up the position of assistant coach for the Maori All Blacks, head coach Colin Cooper has announced today.
Umaga, who has achieved success as a coach with Counties Manukau, as well as with Toulon in the French Top 14, will link up with the side ahead of the Northern hemisphere tour at the end of this year.
Coach Colin Cooper spoke highly of Umaga, saying that "Tana brings a certain mana to our team – he understands the professional rugby environment well and brings a strong High Performance approach to his work."
Umaga has impressed his critics so far as coach of the Blues, with the Auckland based side showing a vast improvement in the 2016 Super Rugby competition, and has been credited for their impressive recruitment drive ahead of the 2017 season, most notably acquiring the signature of Sonny Bill Williams.
Umaga's first competitive match with the Maori All Blacks will be against the USA Eagles in Chicago on November 4.
