Super Rugby picks round five: Can the underdog Chiefs and Highlanders come out on top in Kiwi derbies?

Just because there's only two games for the TVNZ sports buffs to choose this week, that doesn't mean it's any easier! Two big Kiwi derbies - who comes out on top?

How it works: TVNZ sports buffs will chip in their picks for matches involving New Zealand sides each round with some adding a little insight into their thinking. A correct result will give them two points and a correct margin a bonus point!

Matt Hall-Smith - 1 NEWS Sport Reporter, CO-LEADER

Chiefs v Hurricanes: Hurricanes 13+
Highlanders v Crusaders: Crusaders 13+

Guy Heveldt - 1 NEWS Sport Reporter

Chiefs v Hurricanes: Hurricanes 1-12 - "It's official. Until Sam Cane is back, the Chiefs won't be getting any love from me. The same approach as I took with the Blues last year."
Highlanders v Crusaders: Crusaders 1-12

Brodyn Knuckey - 1 NEWS NOW Sport Producer

Chiefs v Hurricanes: Hurricanes 13+ - "Chiefs are in serious trouble this season and it doesn't get any easier going up against a powerhouse like the Canes."
Highlanders v Crusaders: Crusaders 1-12

Maddy Lloyd - Breakfast Reporter

Chiefs v Hurricanes: Hurricanes 13+
Highlanders v Crusaders: Crusaders 13+

Faleatua Malili - 1 NEWS NOW Sport Producer

Chiefs v Hurricanes: Hurricanes 1-12
Highlanders v Crusaders: Crusaders 1-12

Matt Manukia - 1 NEWS Sport Reporter

Chiefs v Hurricanes: Hurricanes 13+
Highlanders v Crusaders: Crusaders 13+

John McKenzie - 1 NEWS Reporter

Chiefs v Hurricanes: Chiefs 1-12: I need upsets to have any hope of climbing the leaderboard... although I also have a small hunch the Chiefs can cause the upset at home this Friday night.

Highlanders v Crusaders: Highlanders 1-12: Highlanders don’t lose at home. Crusaders with what could be one of maybe one or two defeats this season.

Alex Powell - 1 NEWS NOW Sport Producer

Chiefs v Hurricanes: Hurricanes 13+
Highlanders v Crusaders: Crusaders 13+

Dewi Preece - 1 NEWS Sport Reporter

Chiefs v Hurricanes: Hurricanes 1-12: Hurricanes' form in Hamilton is woeful, but luckily for them, I see the Chiefs' current form as far worse. Canes also have the competition's in-form player - Laumape.

Highlanders v Crusaders: Crusaders 1-12: Heart wants to go Highlanders at home, but after failing to clinch a game they should have won in Wellington, I don't see them getting one up on the most ruthless side in the competition.

Michelle Prendiville - 1 NEWS Sport Reporter

Chiefs v Hurricanes: Hurricanes 1-12
Highlanders v Crusaders: Highlanders 1-12

Josh Reich - 1 NEWS NOW Editor, CO-LEADER

Chiefs v Hurricanes: Hurricanes 1-12
Highlanders v Crusaders: Crusaders 13+

Andrew Saville - 1 NEWS Sport Presenter

Chiefs v Hurricanes: Canes 1-12: Picking short margin, but could be a blowout. I’m assuming the Chiefs’ pride is wounded and they will front in Hamilton, although probably not enough for an upset.
Highlanders v Crusaders: Crusaders 1-12: Picking a close game in Dunedin under the roof. Highlanders pack is playing well and will need to against the near unstoppable Crusaders. Despite recent losses in the deep south still picking Crusaders in a “relatively” close one.

Stephen Stuart - 1 NEWS Sport Reporter

Chiefs v Hurricanes: Hurricanes 13+ They’re due to end their lean run in the Tron.
Highlanders v Crusaders: Crusaders 13+ Will make a clean sweep, again, of NZ franchises.

Victor Waters - Breakfast Sport Producer, 2018 Champ

Chiefs v Hurricanes: Hurricanes 1-12: It’s been 12 long years since the Hurricanes last beat the Chiefs in Hamilton. What better time to break the Hamilton hoodoo than against a Chiefs side without a win this season.
Highlanders v Crusaders: Crusaders 1-12: Even though the Highlanders are the last team to beat the Crusaders, the red and blacks should end the Landers’ 15 match unbeaten home run”

Abby Wilson - 1 NEWS Sport Reporter

Chiefs v Hurricanes: Hurricanes 13+ No doubt over the winner but will Damian McKenzie make a difference at fullback? I’ve decided he won’t.
Highlanders v Crusaders: Crusaders 13+ Even after their impressive performance against the Canes I just can’t see the Highlanders having enough to come close to the Crusaders.

Scoreboard: Hall-Smith 43, Reich 43, Wilson 38, Heveldt 36, Stuart 34, Preece 33, Knuckey 31, Saville 31, Waters 31, Powell 30, Lloyd 30, Manukia 26, Prendiville 25, McKenzie 22, Malili 22
