Steve Hansen refuses to name preferred All Blacks successor

December 14, 2018

Hansen will leave his post after next year's World Cup, but doesn't know who'll replace him.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen doesn't want to speculate over the appointment of his successor, having today announced he'll leave his post at the end of next year's World Cup.

Having today revealed his plans for the future,  Hansen was naturally queried as to who he'd think would be best suited to replace him at the helm of the All Blacks from 2020 onwards.

Hansen though, refused to indulge in any sort of speculation whatsoever.

"I don't think it's right that I sit here and say 'that guy should do the job, or that guy should do the job'," he began.

"That's the rugby union's job.

"I've got my opinions, and for one of the very few times in my life, I'll keep that opinion to myself. I don't think it's right for the process."

However, Hansen did talk up the qualities of his current assistant coach, Ian Foster, hinting at his potential ascension to the top job, in the same way that Hansen did after Sir Graham Henry in 2012.

"He'd be a great head coach.

"He's developed as a coach, as a man. He's got some great qualities, his understanding of the game is great."
