Steve Hansen, coaches 'hurting like players' after Bledisloe battering

August 12, 2019

The All Blacks coaching group aren't taking Saturday's defeat well, says Dane Coles.

The All Blacks' coaching staff are feeling the embarrassment of Saturday night's Bledisloe Cup defeat just as much as the players, hooker Dane Coles revealed today.

With Scott Barrett shown a red card to end the first half in Perth, the All Blacks were blown away in the second half, conceding the most points in their history to fall to a 47-26 defeat, now needing a bounce back performance to retain the Bledisloe Cup in Auckland this weekend.

Speaking to media in Auckland, Coles spoke of the reaction to Hansen and his coaching staff in the wake of such a devastating loss.

A needless penalty from Ardie Savea and Scott Barrett's red card had Hansen shaking his head.

"They'll be just hurting like players I suppose," Coles began.

"We could see the way [that] they take ownership. Steve [Hansen] was like straight away after the game 'I can be better and I need to be better for us on Saturday.'

"They just take ownership of it, they do everything they can to make sure we're better and find ways. We're sleeping on the plane, they're on their laptops cutting clips to find ways we can improve and get better.

The All Blacks coach conceded that his side were outperformed by a better side in Perth.

"They take it pretty hard, they're in this with as well. They go through the wins and the losses, they feel the hurt just as much as us. You can see the way they react, they'll get around us and want to be better as well."
